World-renowned mountaineer Nirmal "Nimsdai" Purja, celebrated for redefining the limits of high-altitude climbing, has been declared dead after a devastating avalanche struck Broad Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram range. The confirmation came two days after the 43-year-old climber went missing during an expedition on the world's 12th-highest mountain.
The announcement was made by Elite Exped, the expedition company founded by Purja, bringing a tragic end to an international rescue effort hampered by severe weather and treacherous terrain. The avalanche also claimed the lives of nine other climbers from Nepal, Pakistan, Oman, China and the United States.
'A Legend Who Changed Mountaineering Forever'
In a statement confirming his death, Elite Exped paid tribute to the climber's extraordinary legacy.
"Nimsdai inspired millions across the world by showing that seemingly impossible goals could be achieved with courage, discipline and determination," the company said.
Purja had gone missing after the avalanche struck the expedition team on Thursday while they were attempting to summit Broad Peak (8,051 metres) in Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan region. Rescue teams were unable to reach the site immediately because of dangerous weather conditions.

Born in Nepal and a former British Army Gurkha and UK Special Boat Service (SBS) commando, Purja became a global icon in 2019 when he completed the ascent of all 14 mountains above 8,000 metres in just six months and six days, shattering the previous record. His remarkable achievement was documented in the Netflix film "14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible."
Purja was also widely admired for his high-altitude rescue missions and humanitarian work, often risking his own life to save stranded climbers in the Himalayas.

The avalanche struck around midday on Thursday as an international team attempted to climb Broad Peak, one of the most technically demanding mountains in the Karakoram range.
Rescue efforts involving helicopters and ground teams were severely restricted by unstable snow conditions, high winds and the remote location of the accident.
