Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi staged a sit-in outside the Parliament Street Police Station in New Delhi on Friday, demanding that Delhi Police register a complaint over alleged excessive force used against student protesters during a July 20 demonstration over NEET irregularities.
Gandhi seeks FIR over alleged pellet-gun use at Jantar Mantar
Gandhi arrived at the police station after meeting senior Delhi Police officials and the DCP (Central). He was accompanied by Sahil Lochab, a student who suffered an alleged pellet injury during the July 20 protest. Gandhi is seeking registration of an FIR over the police action and the reported use of pellet guns against protesters.
According to reports, Gandhi had earlier approached Mandir Marg Police Station but proceeded to the DCP's office after the complaint was allegedly not registered. He then reached Parliament Street Police Station and began pressing officials to formally accept the complaint.
‘Will remain here until complaint is accepted’
Gandhi indicated that he would remain at the police station and continue his protest until the complaint was formally accepted. The move escalated the political confrontation over the July 20 student protest and the allegations surrounding police action.
The Congress has alleged that Rapid Action Force personnel used pellet guns during the 'Sansad Chalo' march. Delhi Police, however, has repeatedly denied using pellet guns, making the alleged use of such weapons a major point of contention between the opposition and authorities.
Gandhi has accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of being responsible for what he described as excessive force against students. The Congress has demanded accountability over the alleged police action, while the police's denial has kept the dispute unresolved.
The latest confrontation comes as the opposition continues to raise the student protest issue both inside and outside Parliament, turning the alleged police action into a fresh political flashpoint between the Congress and the Centre.
This is a developing story. More details will be added soon.
