United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that he will step down as both Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party after facing growing pressure from within his own party. In an emotional statement on Monday, Starmer said, “Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party.” Starmer said he had informed King Charles III of his decision and will continue as Prime Minister until the Labour Party elects a new leader, ensuring a smooth transfer of power.
His resignation comes less than two years after the Labour Party’s victory in the 2024 general election. However, the party has recently faced falling public support, disappointing election results, and increasing criticism over the government’s handling of key issues, including the economy and the cost-of-living crisis. These setbacks led many Labour MPs and senior party members to call for a change in leadership.
During his resignation speech outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer thanked his family, colleagues, and the British public for their support. He promised to give his successor his “full and unequivocal support” and said his priority was to ensure stability during the leadership transition.
The Labour Party is expected to begin its leadership contest in July 9, with a new leader likely to take charge before Parliament returns in September. Starmer’s departure means the United Kingdom is set to have its seventh Prime Minister in just a decade, highlighting the continued political instability in the country.
