Two separate electrocution incidents in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region have claimed two lives within a day, raising fresh concerns over electrical safety during the ongoing monsoon.

In Mumbra, a 17-year-old girl lost her life after allegedly receiving an electric shock in a waterlogged area outside her residential building on Wednesday night. Following the incident, the police have registered an FIR against officials of Torrent Power Limited, alleging negligence.

The deceased, identified as Aliya Mohammad Sajid Chandiwala, had stepped out of Yasmin Apartment in the Kausa area at around 8.30 pm during heavy rainfall.

According to the police, she is believed to have come into contact with electricity that had leaked into the waterlogged area near the building's iron gate.

She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

In his complaint, Aliya's father alleged that residents of the building had repeatedly faced voltage fluctuation issues and had informed Torrent Power about the problem through the company's official WhatsApp helpline on June 15. Despite the complaint, he claimed that no corrective measures were taken.

Based on the complaint, Mumbra Police registered an FIR against officials of the power utility and have initiated an investigation into the incident.

The tragedy comes just a day after another electrocution claimed the life of a 26-year-old man in Bhiwandi.

The victim, Mustafa Shaikh, who worked at a sweet shop, died after allegedly coming into contact with a live electric wire in the Teen Batti area on Wednesday. Shaikh, who is survived by his wife and child, had reportedly gone to a nearby temple to collect a metal container.

According to the police, he received a severe electric shock while returning after allegedly touching a live wire. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was declared dead.

The incident triggered protests outside the hospital, with family members and local residents alleging negligence by both the temple management and the power utility.
Police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) in the Bhiwandi case and are continuing their investigation.
