In a significant political setback for the Mamata Banerjee-led Kalighat faction of the Trinamool Congress, senior party leader and Kamarhati MLA Madan Mitra on Wednesday announced his resignation from all organisational posts in the Kalighat TMC and aligned himself with the rebel camp led by Leader of the Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee.
The announcement came after Mitra arrived at the West Bengal Assembly and met Ritabrata Banerjee in his chamber. Dressed in a white kurta and wearing black sunglasses, the veteran TMC leader was seen seated alongside Ritabrata before making his decision public.
Speaking from Ritabrata Banerjee's office, Madan Mitra declared, "I am resigning from all my organisational posts in the Kalighat Trinamool Congress." His statement effectively marks his exit from the Mamata Banerjee-led faction and signals his political realignment with the rebel Trinamool camp.
Mitra's move comes amid growing turmoil within the Trinamool Congress following the Assembly election setback, with several senior leaders shifting their allegiance to the Ritabrata Banerjee-led faction. Political observers view the development as another major blow to the Kalighat camp, particularly because Mitra had long been regarded as one of Mamata Banerjee's trusted lieutenants.
The veteran legislator had recently held key organisational responsibilities, including serving as president of the Dum Dum–Barrackpore organisational district and overseeing the party's hawkers' organisation. His decision to relinquish all party posts is expected to further deepen the divide within the Trinamool Congress.
The development follows speculation that intensified after Madan Mitra held discussions with leaders associated with the Ritabrata camp over the past two days. Wednesday's announcement has now put an end to those rumours, confirming his shift to the rival faction.
This is a breaking story. More details to be shared soon.
