The West Bengal Police have arrested another accused in connection with the Baruipur mob lynching case, taking the total number of arrests to eight. The latest accused, identified as Sakim Laskar alias ‘Kele’, was apprehended from the Suryapur area and is scheduled to be produced before the Baruipur Sub-Divisional Court on Wednesday.

According to police sources, investigators will seek his custody to further probe the case and identify other individuals allegedly involved in the lynching of Indrajit Mondal. Officials said the investigation is progressing rapidly and indicated that more arrests could follow as evidence is examined.

The latest arrest comes days after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited Baruipur and issued a stern warning that all those responsible for the killing would face strict legal action. During his visit to the victim’s family, the Chief Minister asserted that Indrajit was innocent and condemned the mob violence in strong terms.

“He was killed after being identified by name. A 35-year-old unmarried man was tied up and brutally assaulted. Everyone visible in the videos has been arrested. The accused have been tracked down even from places like Bakkhali and Digha,” Adhikari said.

The Chief Minister also announced financial assistance of ₹25 lakh for the victim’s family and confirmed that Indrajit’s elder brother had been offered a civic volunteer’s job. He further stated that the state government had taken responsibility for supporting the family and had arranged for repairs to their damaged home.

The mob lynching occurred in the aftermath of the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl, whose body was recovered from a pond in Suryapur last Sunday. The incident triggered widespread outrage, protests and a railway blockade in the area. Amid the unrest, Indrajit Mondal was allegedly assaulted by a mob on suspicion of involvement in the crime. His family has claimed that he was dragged out of his house while asleep, tied up and beaten to death despite having no connection to the incident.

Police initially arrested two suspects before detaining three more. Following the Chief Minister’s visit, two additional arrests were made, and with the arrest of Sakim Laskar, the total has now risen to eight. The accused have been booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges of unlawful assembly, rioting, obstructing public servants, voluntarily causing grievous hurt, and murder through mob violence.

Investigators said the probe remains ongoing, with forensic evidence, video footage and witness statements being examined to identify all those responsible for the lynching. Authorities have reiterated that no individual involved in the incident will be spared and that further arrests are likely as the investigation progresses.
