Former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday, attributing his exit to disagreements with the party leadership over the political approach and future direction of Tamil Nadu.

In his resignation letter addressed to BJP national president Nitin Nabin, Annamalai reflected on his six-year association with the party and said he had entered politics with the ambition of bringing meaningful political change to Tamil Nadu.

He said his objective was not merely electoral success but also to reshape public perceptions about politics. “Most importantly, I wanted to change the notion that politics is a path only for the elite and a select few, not for the common man,” Annamalai wrote, expressing gratitude to the BJP leadership for placing trust in him despite his inexperience when he joined. “I am extremely thankful to the BJP leadership for trusting a very young and raw man with great responsibility and leadership positions,” he added.

Reflecting on Tamil Nadu’s political climate, Annamalai said people in the state had grown increasingly dissatisfied with traditional political discourse and had repeatedly sought alternatives over the years. “The people of the state were fatigued by the general political discourse for many decades and yearned for a change,” he said, while noting that previous political shifts had failed to sustain momentum and were eventually forgotten.

Annamalai further observed that national political parties had historically struggled to communicate with Tamil Nadu voters in a manner that resonated with them. He said he had attempted to bridge that gap and believed his efforts had met with “reasonable success”, despite facing resistance from both within and outside the party.

While thanking senior BJP leaders for their support, he also acknowledged prolonged ideological differences that had emerged during his tenure. “I would recall the multiple conversations with the top leadership and the disagreements I have expressed over the last 18 months,” he said.

According to Annamalai, sustained discussions with the party’s senior leadership eventually convinced him that there was a fundamental divergence in their vision for Tamil Nadu. “I do not want to burden the top leadership any further with my ongoing thoughts on the way forward for a growth-oriented and culturally rooted politics in Tamil Nadu,” he wrote.

“After my conversations with our senior leadership, I have come to the conclusion that our views do not align regarding Tamil Nadu,” he added. The 42-year-old leader said the time had come for him to step away from the organisation and reassess his political journey and long-term purpose. He formally requested to be relieved of all organisational responsibilities and sought immediate acceptance of his resignation from the party’s primary membership.
