After TMC MPs and MLAs rebelled, Maharashtra's political circles are abuzz with discussions surrounding the much-talked-about "Operation Tiger 2.0," amid speculation that several Members of Parliament and MLAs from the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) could switch allegiance to Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena faction.
Shiv Sena leader has claimed that final discussions have already taken place with 16 MLAs and seven MPs, and that only the dates for their formal induction into the party remain to be finalised.
The development has once again brought "Operation Tiger" into the political spotlight. Notably, there is growing speculation that Dharashiv MP Omraje Nimbalkar, considered a loyalist of Uddhav Thackeray, could also be among those joining the Shinde camp.
In the wake of the Operation Tiger discussions, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray convened a meeting of the party's MPs. However, only four MPs attended the meeting in person, while five others participated virtually, according to Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut.
Among those who joined online was Dharashiv MP Omraje Nimbalkar. Significantly, Uddhav Thackeray had reportedly directed the MPs who attended virtually to hold press conferences and publicly clarify their stand. However, Nimbalkar has not made any such public statement, fuelling speculation that he may be considering a political shift.
Omraje Nimbalkar has long been regarded as one of Uddhav Thackeray's loyal supporters. However, he was absent from the previous two meetings called by Thackeray and also skipped the latest meeting, citing family reasons.
Notably, a verdict in the murder case related to Nimbalkar's father is expected within the next few days. Political observers believe that the outcome of the case could influence his future political decisions. Some speculate that a favourable verdict may increase the possibility of him aligning with the Shinde faction. Nevertheless, Nimbalkar's longstanding loyalty to Uddhav Thackeray cannot be overlooked.
During the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, Omraje Nimbalkar had strongly criticised the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance. He had repeatedly referred to the Shinde faction as "traitors" and maintained that he would never abandon Uddhav Thackeray. He had also claimed to have rejected an offer of a ministerial position.
However, the recent speculation regarding his possible entry into the Shinde camp has surprised many political observers.
According to political sources, Operation Tiger is expected to take place in Delhi rather than Mumbai. However, the move has reportedly been delayed due to the need to fulfil procedural and legal requirements.
Sources indicate that, similar to instances involving groups of MPs from other parties, a two-thirds majority is required for a split to gain legal recognition under anti-defection provisions. This means that at least six out of the nine Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs would need to act together.
Political discussions suggest that while five MPs are reportedly ready to take the next step, the stance of one additional MP may be preventing the operation from moving forward.
Sources said that the formal launch of Operation Tiger could coincide with Shiv Sena's Foundation Day celebrations. Alternatively, the move may be timed with the anticipated Cabinet expansion during the upcoming Monsoon Session of the Maharashtra Legislature.
The names being discussed in connection with the possible political shift include Bandu Jadhav (Parbhani), Sanjay Deshmukh (Yavatmal), Bhausaheb Wakchaure, Sanjay Dina Patil, Nagesh Patil Ashtikar (Hingoli), and Omraje Nimbalkar.
However, Omraje Nimbalkar was also absent from the recent meeting of MPs held at Matoshree, Uddhav Thackeray's residence, and has yet to offer any public explanation for his absence, further intensifying speculation.
If the MPs decide to part ways with the Thackeray-led faction, they will have to submit a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker declaring the formation of a new parliamentary group and formally notifying their departure from the original party.
Under existing provisions, the support of two-thirds of the party's MPs and six out of nine members would be required. The breakaway group would not function independently but would instead be expected to merge with Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena faction.
