Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pralhad Joshi has taken charge as India's new Union Education Minister, succeeding Dharmendra Pradhan, who resigned after taking moral responsibility for the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy. Joshi assumes office at a time when the Ministry of Education faces one of its biggest credibility challenges, with the Centre preparing a series of reforms aimed at overhauling the country's examination system.

Soon after assuming the additional responsibility, Joshi described the appointment as a duty entrusted to him by the Prime Minister."I accept this responsibility with a sense of duty and humility. I am thankful to the Prime Minister... Under the guidance of the Prime Minister, I will work to the best of my ability and fulfil my responsibilities with dedication," he said.

A Five-Time MP From Karnataka

Born on November 27, 1962, in Karnataka's Bijapur, Joshi completed his early schooling in Hubballi, studying at Railway School and later New English School. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Shri Kadasiddheshwar Arts College, Hubballi, before entering public life. Prior to joining full-time politics, he was associated with business.

Joshi has represented Dharwad Lok Sabha constituency continuously since 2004, making him a five-time Member of Parliament. Over the years, he has emerged as one of the BJP's senior organisational leaders in Karnataka and has held several key positions in both the party and the Union government.

Experience in Key Union Ministries

Between 2019 and 2024, Joshi served as the Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines. Following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he was entrusted with the portfolios of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and New and Renewable Energy, which he will continue to oversee alongside the Education Ministry.

As Renewable Energy Minister, he has supervised flagship government initiatives, including the National Green Hydrogen Mission, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, and PM-KUSUM, while overseeing efforts to expand India's renewable energy capacity.

Immediate Challenges Ahead

Joshi's appointment comes amid sweeping changes proposed for India's examination system following the NEET-UG controversy. The Centre is working on reforms that include strengthening safeguards against paper leaks, restructuring the National Testing Agency (NTA), and transitioning NEET to a computer-based examination from 2027. He will also be responsible for overseeing the continued implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) while rebuilding public confidence in the country's examination process.

His appointment marks a significant leadership change at a time when the Ministry of Education is under intense public and political scrutiny, with expectations that his administrative experience will help steer the ministry through a period of major reform.
