A devastating structural failure struck an under-construction warehouse in Kolkata’s Taratala area on Wednesday afternoon, leaving at least three workers dead and raising fears for dozens more trapped beneath tons of concrete and iron debris.
The incident occurred around noon on Transport Depot Road near Brace Bridge when the roof of the three-storey warehouse suddenly caved in during ongoing concrete casting work. Eyewitnesses reported that 50 to 60 labourers were present at the site at the time, many engaged directly in the construction activities when the collapse happened without warning.
Rescue teams from multiple agencies, including Kolkata Police, fire services, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the Indian Army, rushed to the scene and immediately launched large-scale operations. Heavy equipment such as cranes and cutting tools has been deployed to clear the massive iron beams and concrete slabs. As of the latest updates, over 20 workers have been pulled out alive, with several injured and receiving treatment at nearby hospitals like SSKM. However, a significant number- reports ranging from 12 to 15 remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and confirmed that contact has been established with some of those still inside the debris. Control rooms and helplines (including 1070, 8697981070, and local numbers) have been activated to assist families and coordinate the ongoing emergency response.
“The plan for this godown was sanctioned in January 2026. We cant comment much on this. All details are verified. Prima facie it seems there were lapses in plan sanction by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. I will issue a statement from the assembly on Thursday”, said Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
Authorities have initiated a probe into the cause of the collapse. Preliminary suspicions point toward possible use of substandard materials or lapses in construction safety protocols, though no official conclusions have been released yet. This tragedy has once again spotlighted concerns over worker safety and regulatory oversight at construction sites across the city.
Local residents described scenes of chaos as emergency personnel worked frantically amid the rubble. Families of the missing workers gathered at the site, anxiously awaiting news as rescue efforts continued well into the evening.
This incident marks yet another grim reminder of the risks faced by construction labourers in rapidly developing urban areas. As operations proceed, officials urge the public to avoid the area to allow uninterrupted access for rescue teams.
