Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee was on Wednesday suspended from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the ongoing Monsoon Session after he allegedly used unparliamentary and abusive language against women Members of Parliament during a confrontation inside the House.
The action was taken after two women MPs submitted complaints to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, alleging that Banerjee had used offensive language during a heated verbal exchange in the Lok Sabha chamber. Following the suspension, Banerjee was barred from entering the House premises for the remainder of the session.
According to reports, the confrontation erupted after the House had been adjourned amid Opposition protests. Banerjee allegedly referred to one of the rebel MPs as a "chor" (thief), triggering an argument with members of the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), many of whom were formerly associated with the Trinamool Congress.
The MPs involved in the exchange included NCPI leaders Mitali Bagh, Shatabdi Roy and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, all of whom had defected from the TMC following the party's defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections.
Following the altercation, the women MPs, accompanied by other NCPI members, met Speaker Om Birla in his chamber and lodged formal complaints, alleging that Banerjee had used abusive and unparliamentary language against them.
Acting on the complaints, the Speaker suspended the Serampore MP from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the session.
After the suspension order, several TMC MPs escorted Kalyan Banerjee to the Speaker's chamber, where he was given an opportunity to present his version of events.
