Trinamool Congress MLA Dilip Mondal has approached the Calcutta High Court seeking protection from arrest amid multiple FIRs filed against him over alleged “threatening remarks” directed at Opposition supporters.

According to reports, the Bishnupur MLA has also urged the court to quash the FIRs lodged against him. Advocate Kishore Dutta mentioned the matter before the High Court, following which Justice Sougata Bhattacharya permitted the filing of the case. The matter is expected to come up for hearing on May 26.

The controversy erupted after a video of Mondal allegedly making “threatening comments” against workers and supporters of rival political parties surfaced on social media. While the authenticity of the clip has not been independently verified, the video triggered political outrage and prompted police action.

Police teams, accompanied by central forces, had earlier conducted raids at Mondal’s residences in Pailan on May 14. However, the MLA was reportedly “not present” during the search operation. Reports in the Bengali media claimed Mondal had left the premises shortly before police arrived.

Anandabazar Patrika reported that “more than five FIRs” were registered against the MLA over the past few days, while police sources alleged he had been evading arrest since the raids began.

The pressure on the Trinamool legislator intensified further after his son, Arghya Mondal, along with four others, was arrested in a joint operation by the STF and Diamond Harbour Police. Police claimed firearms were recovered during the operation and alleged that the accused were involved in attempts to “create unrest” in the area.

The developments have added to the mounting political tension in West Bengal following the 2026 Assembly elections, with the Opposition accusing the ruling party of intimidation, while Trinamool leaders continue to allege “political vendetta” behind the police action.
