Three men were detained after allegedly using a suspicious government identity card to gain entry into Jio World Plaza in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), with one of them carrying a firearm, Mumbai Police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Monday, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to the area for the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026. However, police have ruled out any direct link between the incident and the Prime Minister’s programme.

According to Mumbai Police, the men allegedly used a government identity card to enter the mall and forced their way past security personnel. One of them was found carrying a firearm.

“Three men allegedly used a suspicious government identity card to gain entry into Jio World Plaza in Mumbai’s BKC area, forcing their way past mall security while one of them was carrying a firearm,” police said.

The firearm recovered from the group was found to be licensed, police said. All three individuals have been detained for questioning.

An FIR has been registered at BKC Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections relating to impersonation of a public servant and unlawful entry while armed with a weapon.

The Mumbai Crime Branch has taken over the investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine why the men attempted to enter the premises using the suspicious identity card.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to attend the Global Fintech Fest 2026 at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in BKC on Tuesday, where he is expected to inaugurate the seventh edition of the major fintech conference.

The four-day Global Fintech Fest is being held from September 8 to 11 and is expected to bring together policymakers, regulators, financial institutions, technology companies, investors and other stakeholders to discuss emerging technologies and the future of finance.

Police said the investigation into Monday’s incident is continuing.
