Education reform activist Sonam Wangchuk on Wednesday completed the 18th day of his indefinite hunger strike at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, with his medical team stating that he remains "very weak" and is under continuous medical supervision. Wangchuk has been on an indefinite fast while demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and seeking justice for students affected by repeated examination paper leaks and alleged irregularities in the country's examination system.
According to the latest medical bulletin issued by Dr Satish Lamba, Wangchuk's health continues to require close monitoring due to the prolonged fast. The bulletin said Wangchuk's weight has fallen to 57.15 kg, a decline of 400 grams from the previous day's 57.55 kg. His blood sugar level was recorded at 80 mg/dL, while his blood pressure stood at 105/76 mmHg. Doctors said his hydration remained fair and that he continued to be mentally alert despite his weakened physical condition.
The medical team added that although Wangchuk remains conscious and responsive, his condition necessitates 24-hour medical vigilance, with doctors closely monitoring all vital parameters around the clock. The health update was released by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which has been spearheading protests at Jantar Mantar over alleged irregularities in national entrance examinations.
Reiterating its demands, the CJP urged the Union government to initiate dialogue with Sonam Wangchuk and address the concerns raised by students across the country regarding repeated paper leaks and examination reforms. They party has announced a one-day mass hunger strike on July 16 in support of Sonam Wangchuk, and also appealed to citizens to participate in its proposed 'Parliament March' on July 20, coinciding with the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. According to the party, the march seeks to press for a transparent examination system, greater accountability for recurring paper leaks, and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the handling of the NEET controversy.
