A 19 year old NEET aspirant was found dead at her home in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district, a day after reappearing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), police said on Tuesday.
According to the police, the student was found hanging by her family members. She was immediately rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
During the investigation, police recovered her NEET question paper, on which she had allegedly written a note addressed to her brother. In the handwritten message, written in Hindi, she said she was “not capable of anything.”
A preliminary police investigation suggests that the student was distressed over her expected performance in the NEET examination. Investigators suspect that examination related stress may have played a role in the incident. However, officials said the exact circumstances surrounding her death are still under investigation.
The student had dreamed of becoming a doctor and wanted to follow in the footsteps of her elder brother, who had cleared the NEET examination in 2021.
Police officer Nirbhay Kumar Singh said the question paper has been seized and sent for forensic and handwriting examination. He added that the body has been sent for post-mortem and that all aspects of the case are being investigated. Further action will be taken after the investigation and post-mortem reports are received.
The student’s brother said there was no pressure on her from the family regarding the examination. He said she had assessed her expected performance after the test and appeared upset. He also said that their father, a farmer, had worked hard to support the education of all three children, and the family is devastated by the tragedy.
Further investigations are still awaited.
