Trinamool Congress Supremo Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday filed a petition challenging the election result in the Bhabanipore Assembly constituency, where she suffered defeat to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly polls. She was accompanied by Trinamool leaders Kunal Ghosh and Dola Sen during the visit After completing court formalities, Banerjee left the High Court premises without making any public statement.

A member of her legal team confirmed that the Trinamool Congress leader had moved the court through an election petition. “An election petition has been filed regarding Bhabanipore,” one of her lawyers said, confirming that the affidavit was connected to the case, reported Anandabazar.

Tuesday’s visit marked Banerjee’s second appearance at the High Court within weeks. Her earlier visit came on 14 May, when she attended proceedings connected to post-poll violence cases. That appearance had turned contentious after a section of lawyers allegedly protested against her presence. Following her exit from court on that occasion, slogans including “chor” (thief) were reportedly raised at the former chief minister.

In the recently conducted 2026 Bengal Assembly election, Mamata Banerjee lost the Bhabanipore seat to Suvendu Adhikari, who later assumed office as chief minister. Suvendu Adhikari secured victory by a margin of more than 15,000 votes, making the contest one of the election’s most politically significant outcomes. Banerjee has now formally contested the result through legal channels.

The latest challenge mirrors Mamata Banerjee’s earlier legal move after the 2021 Assembly election, when she had questioned her defeat in Nandigram, also against Adhikari. That election petition remains pending before the court.
