Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) president Sharad Pawar on Monday said that the INDIA bloc's meeting being held in New Delhi is primarily a review meeting and expressed confidence that differences among alliance partners would be resolved through dialogue in the coming days.
Speaking to reporters in Baramati, Pawar said that senior leaders of the alliance would continue discussions over the next eight to ten days to arrive at a consensus on pending issues.
"Today's meeting is a review meeting. We will again bring together key leaders in the coming days and find a way forward. I am confident that a solution will emerge. The understanding is that no party should take an extreme position during this meeting," Pawar said.
Representing the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) faction at the meeting, MP Supriya Sule has travelled to New Delhi. Pawar said the outcome of the discussions would become clear by the evening, after which further consultations would be held to chart the alliance's future course.
Addressing the issue of farm loan waivers, Pawar said there are certain conditions attached to the government's debt relief scheme that have created difficulties for farmers. While governments are empowered to take decisions, he stressed that democratic governance requires dialogue and necessary corrections when concerns are raised by the public.
"There are conditions attached to the loan waiver scheme, and some of them are problematic. When governments take decisions, people may not always agree with the framework. In a democracy, it is important to engage in dialogue and make necessary corrections," he said.
Pawar also urged the Maharashtra government to engage with the Centre and review the conditions attached to the loan waiver package to ensure that deserving farmers receive the benefits. However, he clarified that the shortcomings in the scheme should not become grounds for rejecting the entire initiative.
"The Chief Minister should discuss the matter with the concerned authorities at the Centre and examine how the conditions can be modified so that farmers are able to benefit from the loan waiver. The scheme may have shortcomings, but that does not mean it should be discarded altogether," he said.
On the agricultural front, Pawar expressed concern over extensive crop damage reported in parts of the state. He said a team of experts had been sent to assess the situation, and a report from the Vasantdada Sugar Institute has confirmed significant losses to banana and sugarcane crops.
"We have received reports indicating severe damage to banana and sugarcane cultivation. Experts and scientists have already conducted field visits, and we have received a written assessment outlining the required measures. We will study the report further, though many aspects remain beyond our immediate control," Pawar said.
The veteran leader's remarks come at a time when opposition parties are attempting to strengthen coordination within the INDIA bloc while simultaneously addressing pressing issues affecting farmers and the rural economy.
