Leaders of the Opposition's INDIA bloc gathered in the national capital on Monday for a crucial strategy meeting aimed at reviving coordination among anti-BJP parties, addressing growing political challenges and charting the alliance's future course amid shifting electoral realities across the country. The meeting, held at the Constitution Club in New Delhi, brought together several senior leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, Hemant Soren, Uddhav Thackeray and other prominent opposition figures.
The gathering marked the INDIA bloc's first major collective engagement in months and came at a politically sensitive moment for several constituent parties that have recently faced electoral setbacks and internal challenges.
Mamata and Sonia Seated Together as Opposition Signals Unity
One of the most closely watched aspects of the meeting was the presence of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, who travelled to Delhi along with senior party leaders amid ongoing political turbulence in West Bengal. During the meeting, Banerjee was seen seated alongside Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, a visual that alliance leaders hoped would reinforce the message of opposition unity.
The meeting also featured Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) leader Supriya Sule and representatives of Left parties were among those present.
According to leaders familiar with the discussions, the central theme of the meeting was "the way forward for opposition politics" and the need to strengthen coordination against the BJP-led NDA government.
Meeting Held Against Backdrop of Political Setbacks
The Delhi conclave assumed added significance because it came in the aftermath of recent Assembly elections that reshaped political equations in several states. For the Trinamool Congress, the meeting was the first major national political engagement following the party's electoral setback in West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee's participation was therefore viewed as an attempt to reassert the party's role within the opposition coalition.
Banerjee had been among the leaders pushing for an INDIA bloc meeting in the weeks following the elections. Sources within opposition circles indicated that she had argued for greater coordination among anti-BJP forces and for a collective response to political developments in several states.
Sources said discussions focused on a range of national issues, including unemployment, rising fuel prices, electoral processes, governance concerns and parliamentary strategy. Alliance leaders were also expected to deliberate on the functioning of democratic institutions and the judiciary, subjects that have increasingly featured in opposition discourse in recent months. The meeting further explored ways to improve coordination inside Parliament and develop a common political narrative ahead of upcoming national debates and legislative sessions
