Former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan made his first appearance in Parliament after stepping down from the Cabinet, using the occasion to send a political message during a brief exchange with Congress leader Jairam Ramesh.
Pradhan received a warm welcome from BJP-led NDA MPs at Parliament's Makar Dwar on Monday. Party colleagues greeted him, escorted him into the complex and presented him with a ceremonial cap in a public display of solidarity following his resignation.
During the reception, Jairam Ramesh approached Pradhan and expressed sympathy over his resignation.
"It happens," Ramesh remarked.
Pradhan immediately responded:
"Nothing happened. I am a street fighter, not an AC room activist."
The exchange was widely interpreted within BJP circles as a signal that Pradhan remains politically confident despite resigning as Union Education Minister and is prepared for his next role within the party.
Pradhan's resignation followed weeks of nationwide protests over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and examination irregularities. Despite stepping down, BJP leaders have rallied behind him, describing his resignation as an act of "political accountability" and "sacrifice in the national interest."
Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Pradhan's residence after his resignation, while BJP president Nitin Nabin and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh publicly praised his contribution to the education sector.
The former minister continues to be regarded as one of the BJP's key organisational strategists. He has previously overseen election campaigns in Bihar, West Bengal, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Karnataka, playing major roles in several BJP victories.
His successful management of the BJP's West Bengal Assembly campaign, which resulted in the party forming its first government in the state in May 2026, has further fuelled speculation that he could soon be entrusted with another major organisational responsibility or lead the party's campaign in one of the upcoming Assembly elections.
Pradhan's return to Parliament coincided with Opposition protests led by Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over the alleged use of excessive force against students during the nationwide NEET protests, setting the stage for another confrontation as Parliament prepares to debate the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026.
