West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday indicated that the long-pending Howrah municipal elections could finally be held within this year, following a high-level administrative meeting in Howrah. The announcement comes amid mounting political pressure and growing civic concerns in the district.
Addressing officials after the meeting, Adhikari reportedly assured that the state government is moving toward resolving the legal and administrative complications surrounding the civic polls. “If everything goes according to plan, the Howrah municipal election will be held this year,” the Chief Minister said during the interaction.
The issue of elections in the Howrah Municipal Corporation has remained unresolved for years due to ward restructuring, administrative disputes and litigation linked to the merger of Bally Municipality with the corporation. Political parties across the spectrum have repeatedly accused successive administrations of delaying the democratic process in one of Bengal’s most politically significant urban bodies.
Sources in the Urban Development department indicated that discussions regarding the election process gained momentum soon after the formation of the new state cabinet. Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul had earlier held discussions with the Chief Minister where the Howrah civic polls reportedly figured prominently.
During the administrative review meeting, the Chief Minister also reportedly focused on civic infrastructure, drainage, road repair and municipal services in the Howrah region. Officials were instructed to speed up pending projects and address public grievances more aggressively ahead of the monsoon season.
Political observers believe the announcement carries major electoral significance, especially after the recent assembly elections reshaped Bengal’s political landscape. The BJP leadership has increasingly projected municipal elections as the next major battleground in urban Bengal.
One senior official present at the meeting described the message from the administration as “clear and time-bound,” while another source said preparations for the electoral process are expected to begin “very soon.”
