A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee over alleged communal and inflammatory remarks made during a public gathering in Kolkata ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The complaint accuses Banerjee of making statements that allegedly hurt religious sentiments and could promote communal disharmony.
According to news agency National Herald , the complaint was filed by advocate Rinki Chattopadhyay Singh, who alleged that some of Banerjee’s remarks were offensive to members of the Hindu community and violated constitutional principles. The FIR reportedly includes charges related to promoting enmity, hurting religious sentiments, criminal intimidation, defamation, and statements that could disturb public peace.
“Such comments are not expected from a person holding a constitutional position,” the complaint stated.
The FIR was lodged at Hare Street Police Station in Kolkata’s Central Division on June 7, 2026, at 3:45 pm. The case has been registered under Sections 196(1), 351(2), and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police officials have confirmed that an investigation has been initiated into the allegations. The case marks another legal challenge for the TMC leader following the party’s defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
The Trinamool Congress has dismissed the allegations and described the FIR as politically motivated. Party leaders have maintained that Banerjee’s comments have been taken out of context and accused political opponents of attempting to target her through legal action.
The matter is expected to remain under scrutiny as investigators examine the speech and the circumstances surrounding the complaint.
