An FIR has been registered against Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra in Chhattisgarh's Raipur over her alleged remarks targeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah, police said.

The case was lodged at Mana Camp Police Station on August 30 based on a complaint filed by a local resident, Gopal Samanto. Police have invoked Sections 196 and 197 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the alleged statement.

The controversy stems from remarks made by the Krishnanagar MP while speaking to reporters in West Bengal's Nadia district. A video of her interaction in Bengali has since gone viral on social media, drawing sharp criticism from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders.

During the interaction, Moitra criticised the Union Home Ministry over the issue of alleged illegal infiltration from Bangladesh, holding the Centre responsible for border security.

Referring to the alleged failure to prevent infiltration, Moitra said that if India's borders could not be protected and infiltrators continued to enter the country, the responsibility lay with the Union Home Minister rather than the West Bengal government. Her remarks, including an alleged statement that Amit Shah's "head should be cut off," triggered political backlash and legal action.

Chhattisgarh CM Demands Action

Reacting to the controversy, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai called on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to take disciplinary action against the TMC MP and sought an apology.

In a post on X, Sai described the remarks as "objectionable" and alleged that such comments could not have been made without the backing of the Trinamool Congress leadership.

He further urged Banerjee to clarify whether she endorsed Moitra's statement and said that if she did not, appropriate action should be taken against the party leader along with a public apology.

No Response from TMC Yet

The Trinamool Congress has not issued an official response to the FIR or the controversy surrounding Moitra's remarks.

Moitra had earlier been expelled from the Lok Sabha in December 2023 after the House accepted the Ethics Committee's report in the "cash-for-query" case. She later returned to Parliament after winning the 2024 Lok Sabha election from the Krishnanagar constituency.

The latest FIR adds to the political row over the MP's comments, with further action expected as the investigation progresses.
