The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday refused to grant urgent relief to Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who had sought permission to travel abroad for medical treatment related to an eye condition.
His lawyer informed the court that Banerjee needed to travel overseas for specialised treatment after undergoing eye surgery in the past and requested an urgent hearing.
The matter was mentioned before Justice Sougata Bhattacharyya.
However, the judge declined to hear the plea on an urgent basis, observing that adequate medical facilities were available in India. According to media reports, while Banerjee does not have a blanket restriction on his foreign travel, as his name features in several ongoing legal cases and courts have directed him to cooperate with investigations, he sought judicial permission before travelling for his treatment.
According to his latest application, Banerjee sought permission to travel abroad for about a week to undergo specialised treatment for his eye condition. However, with the High Court refusing urgent relief, he will have to wait until the matter is heard in due course.
