The Calcutta High Court has granted permission to Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers from the Kalighat area to organise a rally on Wednesday, allowing former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to participate. The court has imposed a strict cap of 1,000 participants to ensure compliance with public order and traffic regulations.

The petition was filed after Kolkata Police reportedly denied permission for the proposed gathering, prompting the local TMC unit to approach the High Court for intervention. Lawyers representing the petitioners argued that the rally was essential to voice concerns over recent law and order issues, including the alleged rape and murder of a minor in Baruipur. Mamata Banerjee had earlier led a candlelight march in Kalighat on Monday to demand justice for the victim.

According to sources familiar with the proceedings, the bench directed authorities to facilitate the event under regulated conditions. Key stipulations include limiting the crowd size to a maximum of 1,000 people, avoiding complete blockage of thoroughfares, and ensuring adequate security arrangements. The court emphasised adherence to previous guidelines on public assemblies to prevent disruptions in the bustling city.

This comes amid heightened political activity in West Bengal, with TMC navigating internal dynamics and external pressures following recent electoral outcomes. Party supporters view the court's nod as a victory for democratic expression, while opposition voices have called for strict monitoring to avoid any violations.

Mamata Banerjee, is expected to address the gathering. Police officials have been instructed to coordinate with organisers for smooth conduct, including route finalisation of the route and crowd management.

A minor has been brutally violated and murdered in Baruipur - the mutilated body was recovered on Sunday leading to widespread protests in the suburban Kolkata. Soon, central forces were deployed outside Mamata Banerjee residence on Sunday evening to allegedly thwart any attempt of she trying to visit Baruipur. TMC had called it house arrest of the former Chief Minister. She however had participate in a candle light march close to her house on Monday.

So far three people have been arrested in connection with the heinous crime. Search for others continue and so does the investigation. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has assured capital punishment for the culprits while extending every support to the bereaved family.
