In a major development in the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case, the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday ordered a fresh investigation into allegations of evidence tampering and an attempted cover-up surrounding the 2024 crime that shook the country.

A division bench directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to constitute a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by the agency’s Joint Director (East) to probe claims that crucial aspects of the case may have been “hushed up” during the initial investigation. The court has asked the SIT to submit a detailed report by June 25.
The fresh probe will reportedly focus on the sequence of events immediately after the crime, including allegations of destruction of evidence, handling of the crime scene, and whether attempts were made to suppress key information linked to the murder of the junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

During the hearing, the High Court expressed concern over allegations raised by the victim’s family and other petitioners that the earlier investigation had failed to uncover the “larger conspiracy” behind the incident. The bench reportedly observed that the court could not ignore accusations of “deliberate concealment” surrounding the case.

RG Kar Medical College & Hospital Doctor’s Brutal Rape & Muder

The RG Kar case had triggered nationwide outrage after a 31-year-old trainee doctor was found raped and murdered inside the hospital premises in August 2024. Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer attached to Kolkata Police, was later convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. However, the victim’s family and several activists have consistently demanded a wider investigation, alleging that multiple individuals may have been involved and that evidence was compromised.

The High Court’s latest order comes amid increasing scrutiny of the original handling of the case. Earlier this month, the state government suspended three IPS officers, including former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, over alleged lapses linked to the investigation.

The court has also instructed the CBI to produce all documents, photographs, audio recordings and video materials connected to the investigation. Sources familiar with the proceedings said the judiciary wants to examine whether “critical evidence was ignored or suppressed.”
