Political speculation over a major cabinet expansion in West Bengal gathered momentum on Wednesday after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari held an extended closed-door meeting with Governor R N Ravi at Lok Bhavan, the Governor’s official residence in Kolkata.
According to reports, Adhikari arrived at Lok Bhavan around 11:30 am and remained in discussion with the Governor for nearly one hour and forty minutes before leaving shortly after 1 pm. While neither Raj Bhavan nor the Chief Minister’s Office officially disclosed the details of the meeting, political circles immediately linked the development to the long-awaited expansion of the BJP-led state cabinet.
The meeting comes at a crucial moment for the newly formed BJP government in Bengal, which is still functioning with a relatively small group of ministers following the swearing-in ceremony held earlier this month. Suvendu Adhikari took oath as West Bengal’s first BJP Chief Minister on May 9, alongside a handful of ministers including Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Nishith Pramanik, Ashok Kirtaniya and Kshudiram Tudu.
However, a full-fledged cabinet has not yet been constituted, prompting weeks of political discussion over when the government would finally complete the ministerial structure. Wednesday’s lengthy meeting with Governor Ravi is now being seen as the clearest indication yet that the expansion process has entered its final stage.
Focus on Full Cabinet Before Budget Session
Sources within the BJP reportedly believe that the state government is eager to complete cabinet formation before the upcoming full budget session scheduled for June. Political observers say the administration wants departmental responsibilities to be distributed quickly so that the government can function more effectively during the budget proceedings and early administrative phase.
The BJP leadership is also understood to be balancing several political considerations while selecting ministers. Apart from administrative experience, the party is reportedly trying to ensure representation from different regions and communities across Bengal, including North Bengal, Jangalmahal and minority-dominated districts.
Despite the BJP securing a strong legislative majority in the Assembly elections, party insiders acknowledge that many first-time MLAs lack direct governance experience. That factor is believed to have slowed the process of cabinet formation, with the leadership preferring careful selection over rapid expansion.
Delhi Consultations and Internal Strategy
Reports also suggest that Chief Minister Adhikari and state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya recently travelled to Delhi to hold consultations with the party’s central leadership regarding the final structure of the cabinet.
Discussions reportedly included possible ministerial names, portfolio distribution and broader administrative strategy for Bengal.
Since returning from Delhi, the pace of political activity surrounding cabinet formation appears to have accelerated significantly. Speculation is now rife that a fresh swearing-in ceremony for new ministers could take place within days, possibly later this week, with Governor Ravi administering the oath at Lok Bhavan.
Political Significance Beyond Administration
The cabinet expansion carries significance far beyond routine governance. For the BJP, which formed the government in Bengal for the first time in the state’s history, the composition of the cabinet will send an important political message about regional balance, caste equations, ideological priorities and organisational reward structures.
The choices made by Adhikari could also shape the BJP’s long-term consolidation strategy in Bengal, especially after a fiercely contested election that dramatically altered the state’s political landscape.
Political analysts believe that the expansion may also reveal how much influence the central BJP leadership intends to retain over the Bengal administration. The inclusion of experienced organisational leaders, former MPs, district-level faces and ideological loyalists will likely be watched closely by both supporters and opposition parties.
Growing Anticipation in Political Circles
As speculation intensifies, discussions over potential ministerial candidates have already begun across Bengal’s political circles. Names from North Bengal, tribal belts and senior organisational ranks are reportedly under consideration, though no official confirmation has emerged so far.
The Governor-Chief Minister meeting has therefore become politically symbolic — not merely as an administrative consultation, but as a signal that Bengal’s new government is preparing to move into its next phase.
With the budget session approaching and expectations mounting around the BJP’s first full term in power in Bengal, all eyes are now on Lok Bhavan and the possibility of a major cabinet announcement in the coming days.
