The West Bengal government has initiated a process to remove ineligible beneficiaries from the state’s food security programme, signalling a major overhaul of the Khadya Sathi database amid concerns over alleged misuse of public funds, a report .

According to officials, the exercise is being undertaken in the backdrop of the ongoing scrutiny of beneficiary records and follows concerns that state resources meant for genuine recipients may be reaching those deemed ineligible. The government is reportedly banking on data generated through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process to identify and eliminate questionable entries from the ration card database.

Food and Supplies Department officials indicated that a verification drive is underway to cross-check ration card holders and weed out names that no longer qualify for benefits. “We have already started the process of checking ration cards,” a senior minister was quoted as saying, adding that the objective is to ensure that welfare benefits reach only eligible citizens.

The move is expected to have a direct impact on the disbursal of benefits under the Khadya Sathi scheme, one of the state’s flagship welfare programmes. Government sources maintain that the exercise is aimed at improving transparency and preventing leakage of public money.

The development comes amid a wider political debate over the implications of the SIR process and its effect on access to government welfare schemes. While the administration argues that the verification drive is necessary to safeguard public funds, the exercise is likely to draw close scrutiny in the coming weeks.
