Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra on Wednesday alleged that BJP 'goons' attacked her transit office in Krishnanagar by pelting eggs and vegetables, accusing the police and central forces of remaining passive despite being present at the scene.
Videos shared by the Krishnanagar MP on social media showed protesters outside her office hurling eggs toward the building while raising slogans. In a Facebook livestream from inside the office, Moitra documented what she described as a sustained assault.
"Currently being attacked by BJP goons with West Bengal Police watching on," Moitra posted on X.
Addressing viewers during the livestream, the TMC leader alleged that law enforcement agencies failed to intervene despite repeated appeals.
"See what's going on. With the police watching, this is a BJP mob. I have been standing here for the past one hour. I have called the DGP and everybody else, but the police are sitting and watching. The CRPF is watching," she said.
Refusing to leave the premises, Moitra asserted that she would remain at her office despite the protest.
"This is my area. I'm an MP here. I'm in my office. I am not going to move. Please see their faces. Tomorrow, the West Bengal government will deny it. No police will take cognizance. No court will take cognizance. The CRPF is watching," she added.
Eyewitnesses described the incident as a virtual "rain of eggs," with projectiles repeatedly striking the building's walls and windows. In another appeal during the livestream, Moitra said:
"They are continuously throwing eggs. Look at the sheer anarchy prevailing in Bengal; let the entire state, the entire nation witness this."
She further alleged that although police and central security personnel reached the location after being informed, the protesters allegedly continued pelting eggs in their presence without being stopped.
The incident comes a day after the Calcutta High Court directed the West Bengal government to ensure that police register FIRs in all incidents involving egg pelting against accused persons or political opponents. While hearing a public interest litigation, a division bench observed that the fundamental rights of an accused person cannot be taken away.
Reacting to the controversy, West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya distanced the party from the incident.
"Throwing eggs is not BJP's culture," Bhattacharya said, adding that party workers should stay.
Taking to social media, TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee has condemned attack questioning the ruling party in Bengal. “I strongly condemn the attack on MP Mahua Moitra. The silence of the WB Police, despite the High Court’s recent direction to the DGP to ensure appropriate safeguards, raises serious questions. Is this what PORIBARTAN was meant to look like? When an elected representative is heckled simply because she refuses to bend, it is not an expression of strength. It is an admission of insecurity and cowardice. To those clapping from the sidelines: Don’t mistake today’s political power for permanent immunity. Every abuse of authority leaves a mark and every act of intimidation is remembered. The tide of politics changes faster than many expect,” he wrote.
