A tuition teacher has been arrested by Lake Town police in connection with the alleged rape of a Class 10 minor girl. The accused was detained on Saturday and produced before a court on Sunday.
The minor, according to her complaint, was allegedly called to the teacher’s residence in the Lake Town area, where he is accused of intoxicating her before sexually assaulting her. The girl subsequently lodged a complaint with the police, leading to the teacher’s prompt arrest.
This latest case adds to a string of reported incidents involving sexual violence against minors in West Bengal over the past two weeks. It has intensified public concern, particularly in the wake of the Baruipur horror, where an 11 year old girl was allegedly gang raped and murdered in Surjyapur village, triggering widespread protests and scrutiny of law enforcement.
Police have registered a case under the relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Investigators are examining evidence and statements as part of a detailed probe.
Officials have emphasised that the matter is being handled with priority, given the vulnerability of the victim. The accused has been remanded in police custody following his court appearance.
The incident has once again raised alarms about the safety of children under the supervision of private tutors and the broader challenges of protecting minors in the state. Authorities have appealed for vigilance from parents and guardians while assuring a fair and thorough investigation.
