Trinamool Congress MP and party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Kolkata on Monday in connection with its money laundering investigation into the alleged West Bengal primary school recruitment scam. He arrived at the agency's office at the CGO Complex around 11 a.m. following a summons issued by the central agency.
The questioning is part of the ED's ongoing probe into alleged irregularities in the recruitment of primary school teachers and non-teaching staff in West Bengal. Investigators are examining the suspected flow of funds linked to the recruitment process and are expected to record Banerjee's statement.
According to ED officials, the agency plans to question Banerjee regarding financial documents, digital evidence and statements recorded from other accused individuals during the course of the investigation. “Investigators would seek to trace the movement of funds and examine whether transactions were layered to hide their origin,” a senior ED official said.
The case stems from allegations of corruption and irregularities in school recruitment processes that have been under scrutiny for several years. The ED registered a money laundering case based on predicate offences being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and other agencies.
The development comes amid heightened legal and political attention surrounding recruitment-related cases in West Bengal. Earlier, the Supreme Court had quashed more than 25,000 appointments of teachers and non-teaching staff, observing that the recruitment process had been “vitiated and tainted.”
