Tension gripped West Bengal’s Birbhum district after a large cache of fresh crude bombs was recovered from Kot village under Mallarpur police station limits on Friday morning. The recovery triggered panic among local residents, particularly in the aftermath of the recent elections.
According to local sources, villagers first spotted several bombs stacked in rows beside a bamboo grove near Chandermath pond in the village. Alarmed by the sight, residents immediately informed the police.
Soon after receiving the information, a large contingent from Mallarpur Police Station rushed to the spot and cordoned off the entire area. Police later recovered approximately 31 fresh crude bombs from beside the bamboo grove in the open field.
Officials said the area has been sealed off as a precautionary measure, while the bomb disposal squad has already been informed to safely defuse the explosives. “The spot has been secured and the bombs will be neutralised following standard procedure,” a police source said.
The incident has sparked fear among villagers, who expressed concern over how such a large quantity of explosives was allegedly stored in a populated area. Residents said the recovery has created an atmosphere of anxiety in the village.
Police have launched an investigation to determine who kept the bombs there and for what purpose. No arrests had been reported till the filing of this report.
