A plea seeking restrictions on the entry of outsiders into Jadavpur University and other universities in West Bengal has been brought to the attention of the Calcutta High Court, with the petitioner seeking an early hearing of a pending public interest litigation (PIL).

The matter was mentioned before a division bench comprising Justice Arijit Banerjee and Justice Rituparna Mitra, seeking an expedited hearing. The case is scheduled to come up before the division bench headed by Chief Justice Rabindra V. Ghuge on Wednesday.

The PIL raises concerns over the alleged unrestricted entry of people from outside university campuses and its possible impact on academic activities and campus discipline.

The plea comes against the backdrop of a recent clash on the Jadavpur University campus involving student groups associated with the Left and the BJP. The incident triggered political reactions and raised concerns over security and the presence of outsiders on campus.

According to the petition, outsiders allegedly entered the university premises during such incidents and were involved in acts of vandalism. The petitioner has argued that repeated instances of unauthorised entry could disrupt the normal functioning of the campus.

The plea further contends that such incidents affect students who are not involved in political activities and interfere with the academic environment.

The petitioner has therefore sought steps to regulate access to university campuses and prevent unauthorised persons from entering, while the court is expected to consider the matter at Wednesday's hearing.
