Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has approached the Calcutta High Court over an alleged egg attack during her visit to her Krishnanagar constituency, accusing the police of failing to act despite directions concerning her security.
Moitra’s lawyer mentioned the matter before Justice Sougata Bhattacharyya on Monday and sought an early hearing. The court allowed the MP to file a case but declined the request for an expedited hearing, directing that the matter be taken up according to the regular listing.
The incident took place last week at Haulia Park More in Tehatta, within the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency. Moitra had visited a party office to meet local leaders and workers.
According to the allegations, a group of BJP supporters gathered outside the office after learning of her visit. As Moitra left the premises, protesters allegedly displayed black flags, raised “Go Back” slogans and threw raw eggs at her.
Moitra subsequently accused the police of failing to control the protesters and alleged that officers instead forced her into her vehicle. She later lodged a complaint at Tehatta police station. The BJP, however, has denied that those involved in the incident were members or supporters of the party.
The MP has alleged that the police failed to take adequate preventive measures despite an earlier court direction concerning her security.
In her latest move, she has sought judicial intervention over the alleged police inaction during the incident.
On the day of the attack, Moitra also posted a video message from inside her vehicle. Referring to an earlier observation made by Supreme Court Justice Dipankar Datta during proceedings related to her appearance at a police station, she said: “See, I am eating eggs like bullets.”
Justice Datta had previously remarked during the August proceedings: “Why are you afraid of eggs being thrown at you after entering politics? Freedom fighters took bullets on their chests.”
