In a major anti-narcotics operation, the Kolkata Police Special Task Force (STF), in coordination with the Purulia district police, dismantled an interstate drug trafficking racket and detained seven people during a late-night operation in Purulia district, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Tuesday. According to the Chief Minister, the joint team intercepted a truck on National Highway 18 near the Belkuri Toll Plaza under the Purulia Muffasil Police Station limits on Monday night and recovered a large quantity of ganja concealed inside the vehicle.
While confirming the seizure, the Chief Minister did not disclose the quantity or the estimated market value of the contraband.
In a post on X, Adhikari praised the coordinated operation carried out by the law enforcement agencies. "I commend the swift, coordinated and resolute action of our Law Enforcement Agencies," the Chief Minister said. He added that the narcotics had been hidden inside a "specially concealed cavity behind the driver's seat of the truck."
According to the Chief Minister, investigators also intercepted two escort vehicles that were travelling alongside the truck from Odisha towards Asansol. A total of seven persons were detained during the operation.
Reiterating the state's zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking, Adhikari said the government would continue taking strict action against criminal networks involved in the illegal narcotics trade.
"We remain committed to acting firmly against activities that threaten the safety and well-being of our youth and society," the Chief Minister said.
He also lauded the efforts of the Kolkata Police STF and Purulia district police, describing their vigilance and professionalism as crucial to the success of the operation.
"We will continue to root out such criminal networks with an iron fist," Adhikari added.
Police are now investigating the interstate network to identify the source, destination and other individuals linked to the trafficking racket. Further investigation is underway.
