Former West Bengal Governor and Padma Shri awardee Dr D Y Patil passed away at his residence in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. He was 92. A veteran Congress leader, educationist and philanthropist, Patil is survived by his sons, including former Maharashtra minister and Congress leader Satej Patil.
Leaders across the political spectrum condoled his death, remembering his contribution to education, healthcare and public life.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described Patil's demise as "extremely heartbreaking", calling him a visionary who transformed education and expanded opportunities for ordinary students. "His passing has caused the loss of a visionary personality. I offer my heartfelt tribute to him," Fadnavis said.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde termed Patil a "great educationist" and said his death had left an "indelible void" in Maharashtra and the academic community. "Far beyond merely establishing institutions, he imparted education rooted in the principles of academic excellence and holistic education," Shinde said, adding that Patil elevated the dignity of the Governor's office during his tenures in Bihar, Tripura and West Bengal.
NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar also expressed grief, saying Maharashtra had lost a visionary and socially committed leader. "The unparalleled work he accomplished in the fields of education, health, sports and social service will inspire generations," Pawar said.
Former Union minister Suresh Prabhu remembered Patil as a "distinguished educationist" whose vision transformed the lives of countless students. "I will always remember his kindness, humility and unwavering commitment to public service," Prabhu said.
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary described the news as "extremely heartbreaking", saying Patil's contributions to education, healthcare and public service would remain an enduring legacy. "His inspiring life will forever remain memorable," Choudhary said, offering condolences to Patil's family and well-wishers.
Born in Kolhapur, D Y Patil served as an MLA between 1967 and 1978 before turning his focus to education. He went on to establish the D Y Patil Group of Institutions, including D Y Patil University, which offers courses in medicine, engineering and several other disciplines. Patil also served as the Governor of Tripura and Bihar, besides holding additional charge of West Bengal. He was conferred the Padma Shri for his contributions to education and public service.
