A relative of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was found dead 'under mysterious circumstances' at her home in Birbhum district on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Bristi Mukherjee, who is niece of ex-CM.
Her hanging body was discovered inside her residence in Birbhum, prompting police to reach the spot and begin an investigation. Local reports and family members are describing the death as “mysterious”, though official conclusions on the cause and manner of death have not yet been detailed in the published report.
Bristi had worked as a clerical staff member at Bolpur High School after being recruited through the state’s SSC process. In March 2023, following a Calcutta High Court order in the SSC recruitment irregularities case, her appointment was cancelled along with several others on grounds of alleged irregularities in the recruitment process. Reports also note that she was facing an ongoing divorce case at the time of her death.
Police are expected to examine the scene, collect statements from family and neighbours, and await post-mortem findings before classifying the case further.
