A special public prosecutor handling cases against Trinamool Congress leader and husband of ex-TMC MLA Aditi Munsi, Debraj Chakraborty, has alleged that he received a threatening phone call from an unidentified man who claimed to be associated with the TMC leader, as reported by Anandabazar Patrika. The lawyer subsequently lodged a complaint at Baguiati police station, prompting police to begin an inquiry into the alleged threat.

The prosecutor, Bibhas Chattopadhyay, said the caller told him that he wanted to discuss the cases involving Debraj Chakraborty and claimed that he was making the call on the instructions of “dada”. According to Chattopadhyay, the caller's tone suggested that he was trying to discourage the lawyer from pursuing the case further.

Caller identified himself as ‘AB Committee Member’

Chattopadhyay said the number displayed a caller-identification label that added another element to the complaint.

“The name shown on Truecaller was ‘AB Committee Member’. I do not know what that means. I have informed the police about the entire matter,” the prosecutor said, as quoted by Anandabazar Patrika.

The lawyer alleged that the caller introduced himself as someone close to Debraj and attempted to speak about the ongoing legal proceedings. He said he approached the police after receiving what he considered an intimidating call.

Police sources said an inquiry into the complaint had begun and that an FIR was expected to be registered. Investigators are likely to examine the phone number and other available details to establish the identity of the caller and determine whether the alleged threat was connected to the pending cases.

One case already chargesheeted

The complaint comes at a significant stage in the proceedings against Debraj Chakraborty. Two FIRs had earlier been registered at Baguiati police station against the TMC leader.

Of the cases arising from those FIRs, the chargesheet in one has already been submitted and the framing of charges is expected to follow. The investigation into the second case is still continuing, according to the report.

Chattopadhyay is also handling several other important cases for the state. Among them is the case involving Birbhum-based stone trader Tuloo Mondal. The prosecutor has previously alleged that indirect pressure had also been brought to bear on him in connection with another case during the previous government.

Debraj Chakraborty, the husband of former TMC MLA Aditi Munshi, was arrested in July in connection with allegations including extortion and possession of assets disproportionate to known sources of income.

He has also faced allegations relating to extortion, syndicate activities and land-related disputes in the Bidhannagar area. The TMC leader was also named as an accused in a post-poll violence case dating back to 2021.
