The Election Commission (EC) on Saturday sought additional documentary evidence from the faction led by Leader of Opposition (LoP) Ritabrata Banerjee as it continued hearings into the bitter dispute over the Trinamool Congress (TMC) name and its iconic twin-flower election symbol.

The proceedings at Nirvachan Sadan saw the EC hear both factions separately, with the Ritabrata camp appearing first, followed by representatives of the Mamata Banerjee-led group. The Commission is examining rival claims over the party’s organisational control, legislative strength and entitlement to the recognised name and symbol ahead of upcoming by-elections.

EC asks for additional proof
According to reports, during the hearing, the Commission asked Ritabrata Banerjee’s faction to submit further supporting documents to substantiate its claim that it represents the legitimate organisational and legislative majority within the party. According to officials familiar with the proceedings, the EC did not conclude the matter and kept the process open for additional submissions.

Ritabrata Banerjee maintained that his group had followed the legal process.
“We have acted strictly according to the rules and submitted the required documents,” Ritabrata Banerjee said after the hearing, expressing confidence that the Commission would take an early decision.

The Mamata Banerjee faction argued that the party’s constitution, organisational structure and founding leadership firmly establish its claim over the Trinamool Congress name and symbol. Its representatives urged the EC to reject the rival faction’s demand for recognition, insisting that the original party continues under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership.

According to the hearing schedule issued by the EC, both camps were allotted separate time slots and were asked in advance to furnish the names of their delegates and other procedural details before appearing in Delhi

The dispute has acquired urgency because nominations for the Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly by-elections are scheduled to begin shortly. Election Commission officials are aiming to resolve the question of the recognised party name and election symbol before the nomination deadline, ensuring clarity for candidates and voters.

While Saturday’s hearing marked a significant step in the adjudication process, the Commission has not announced a final verdict.
