Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar was found dead inside his office chamber at the Police Headquarters in Agartala on Monday, triggering shock across the state's administrative and police circles.
The senior IPS officer was rushed to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital after he was discovered unconscious. Doctors made extensive efforts to revive him, including nearly 48 minutes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), before declaring him dead at 12:48 pm.
According to preliminary reports, Dhankar is suspected to have died by suicide. However, the exact cause and circumstances surrounding his death are yet to be officially established.
Secretary to the Chief Minister, Kiran Gitte, said that while initial indications point towards suicide, the matter remains under investigation and the official cause of death will be confirmed only after due process.
Speaking to India Today, senior physician Dr Pradip Bhowmik said the DGP was brought to the hospital at around 12 pm with no pulse, blood pressure, temperature or other vital signs.
"Our attending doctors immediately initiated CPR in the emergency unit. A team of specialists continued resuscitation efforts for about 48 minutes, but despite all attempts, he could not be revived. He was officially declared dead at 12:48 pm," Dr Bhowmik said.
The doctor added that the exact cause of death could only be determined after a post-mortem examination. He also said the medical team's immediate priority was to save the officer's life, and any findings regarding visible injuries or signs of hanging would be confirmed through the autopsy.
Following the incident, senior police officials reached the Police Headquarters, secured the premises and launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to Dhankar's death.
Police have not yet issued a detailed official statement, and authorities said further information will be available after the completion of the post-mortem examination and the ongoing investigation.
