The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in West Bengal, citing figures it says were obtained through a Right to Information (RTI) response from the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB). The party has claimed that 2,454 rape cases and 600 murder cases were recorded in the state during the first five months of the new government, accusing the administration of failing to ensure public safety.

In a post on social media, the TMC criticised the BJP over what it described as a deterioration in law and order. “The sick ‘Poriborton’ that @BJP4Bengal has brought to our State — SCRB records 2454 rape cases and 600 murder cases in last 5 months,” the party said.

The TMC added that the figures had emerged while the BJP was in power and alleged that “Law & Order has completely collapsed. No safety. No accountability. No media outrage.”

The allegations form part of the party’s broader political criticism of the BJP government’s handling of crime and women’s safety. The figures and the party’s interpretation of them have not been independently verified for this report.

SCRB figures cited by TMC

According to the figures reproduced in the party’s social media post, the alleged crime statistics for May to September 24, 2026, were as follows:

The monthly breakdown shared by the party lists 349 rape cases in May, 389 in June, 786 in July, 459 in August and 471 up to September 24. The figures total 2,454 cases.

The TMC also questioned the BJP’s promise of a “safe and secure Bengal”, invoking the slogan “Bhorsha In, Bhoy Out”. The party said people deserved “security, accountability and justice” and directly targeted Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari over what it alleged were failures in governance.

Political row over law and order

The allegations have brought women’s safety and the state’s law-and-order situation into the political spotlight. By citing figures attributed to the SCRB, the TMC has sought to challenge the BJP government’s claims about public safety and demand accountability from the administration.

However, the numbers cited by the party should be understood as figures it attributes to an RTI response; they do not, by themselves, establish the circumstances of individual cases or demonstrate that the change in government caused any increase in crime. The underlying records and comparable figures from earlier periods would be needed to assess trends independently.

BJP has not yet responded to the aforementioned claims.
