West Bengal could be headed towards a major shift in its healthcare delivery system after senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari announced that beneficiaries of the state-run Swasthya Sathi scheme may also receive benefits under the Centre’s Ayushman Bharat programme.

The announcement has triggered fresh discussions over the possible integration of the two large-scale health insurance schemes, potentially bringing millions of residents under a combined healthcare framework.

At present, Ayushman Bharat provides coverage based on specific socio-economic eligibility criteria, while West Bengal’s Swasthya Sathi scheme has operated with a much broader beneficiary base.

Administrative sources indicate that officials are now examining how both schemes can function simultaneously without disrupting existing healthcare access.

According to sources within the health department, the state may introduce a dual-category structure. One category would include beneficiaries already eligible under Ayushman Bharat norms, while another could cover Swasthya Sathi cardholders who fall outside the Centre’s eligibility criteria. Funding structures and coverage limits for the two categories may differ.

Meanwhile, private hospitals across the state have reportedly been instructed to expedite their enrolment on the Ayushman Bharat portal.

Several healthcare institutions have already initiated the registration process in anticipation of a wider rollout.

Healthcare stakeholders believe that a coordinated implementation of the two schemes could significantly improve access to treatment and reduce administrative complications for patients.

Although the government has not yet released a final roadmap, indications suggest that Swasthya Sathi may not be discontinued immediately.

Instead, authorities could move towards a phased integration model combining state and central healthcare coverage systems.
