The Suvendu Adhikari-led government in West Bengal underwent its first major expansion on Sunday, with 35 ministers taking the oath of office and secrecy at a grand ceremony in Kolkata. The induction significantly broadens the BJP government's administrative structure less than a month after it assumed power, taking the total strength of the Council of Ministers to 41.

Governor R.N. Ravi administered the oath to the new ministers in the presence of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, senior BJP leaders, legislators, and top bureaucrats. The ceremony marked the formal completion of the government's first phase of cabinet formation following the BJP's historic victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.

The expansion saw the induction of 13 Cabinet Ministers, three Ministers of State (Independent Charge), and 19 Ministers of State, reflecting the government's attempt to balance regional representation, caste and community considerations, administrative experience, and political outreach across Bengal.

13 Inducted as Cabinet Ministers

The following leaders took oath as Cabinet Ministers:

  • Deepak Barman
  • Tapas Roy
  • Dr. Shankar Ghosh
  • Manoj Kumar Oraon
  • Arjun Singh
  • Gouri Shankar Ghosh
  • Swapan Dasgupta
  • Jagannatha Chattopadhyay
  • Kalyan Chakraborty
  • Ajay Poddar
  • Saradwat Mukherjee
  • Dudh Kumar Mondal
  • Anup Kumar Das

The inclusion of several prominent BJP faces alongside experienced political figures is being viewed as an attempt by the Adhikari government to strengthen both governance and political management ahead of a crucial administrative term.

Three Ministers Get Independent Charge

Three legislators were sworn in as Ministers of State with Independent Charge:

  • Dr. Indranil Khan
  • Malati Rava Roy
  • Rajesh Mahato

Their elevation is being seen as recognition of their organisational and electoral contributions, while also providing greater representation to diverse regions of the state.

19 Take Oath as Ministers of State

A larger group of legislators was inducted as Ministers of State:

  • Joel Murmu
  • Hare Krishna Bera
  • Anandamay Barman
  • Ashok Dinda
  • Nadiar Chand Bauri
  • Vishal Lama
  • Shantanu Pramanik
  • Moumita Biswas Mishra
  • Umesh Ray
  • Purnima Chakravarty
  • Kaushik Chowdhury
  • Bhaskar Bhattacharya
  • Dibakar Gharami
  • Amiya Kisku
  • Kalita Majhi
  • Gargi Das Ghosh
  • Biraj Biswas
  • Dipankar Jana
  • Sumana Sarkar

The appointments indicate a conscious effort by the BJP leadership to bring in representation from North Bengal, Junglemahal, tribal communities, border districts, urban centres and women leaders.

Government Moves Into Governance Mode

The cabinet expansion comes at a crucial moment for the newly formed government as it transitions from election mode to full-scale governance. With most key administrative positions now filled, the focus is expected to shift towards policy implementation, welfare delivery and execution of the BJP's electoral promises.

Sources in the administration said portfolio allocation is expected shortly, following consultations between the Chief Minister and senior party leadership. The distribution of major departments will be closely watched as it is expected to provide a clearer picture of the government's policy priorities and internal power structure.

The expanded ministry is also expected to play a key role in implementing several flagship initiatives announced by the BJP government since assuming office. These include welfare schemes, administrative reforms, anti-corruption measures and governance restructuring promised during the election campaign.

For Suvendu Adhikari, who became West Bengal's first BJP Chief Minister after ending the Trinamool Congress' 15-year rule, the large-scale cabinet expansion represents the next stage in consolidating power and building a statewide administrative network.

With a full-fledged ministry now in place, the spotlight will shift from political transition to governance, as the Adhikari government begins the task of translating its electoral mandate into policy and administration across the state.
