At least six workers were killed and several others injured after an under-construction bridge collapsed during a severe storm in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district in the early hours of Friday. The bridge, being built over the Betwa River, connected Morakandar Parsani and nearby villages in the district.
According to officials, the incident took place around 2 am amid heavy rain and strong winds, when a slab and portions of the structure gave way, trapping workers under the debris. Rescue operations involving the police, SDRF personnel and local residents continued through the morning. Authorities said three workers who were stranded on a pillar were rescued and shifted to hospital.
Hamirpur ASP Arvind Kumar Verma said police teams rushed to the site immediately after receiving information about the collapse. The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination, while debris removal work is ongoing to check if anyone else remains trapped.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the incident and announced financial assistance for the families of the victims. He also directed officials to ensure speedy rescue and relief operations.
