Authorities have imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in the police station areas of Baruipur, Narendrapur and Sonarpur following unrest triggered by the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl and the subsequent death of a suspected accused in mob violence.

According to the police, two persons have been arrested so far in connection with the incident, while three others have been detained for questioning. Additional police personnel have been deployed across the affected areas, and patrolling has been intensified to maintain law and order.

The administration has appealed to residents not to believe or spread rumours, to maintain peace, and "not to take the law into their own hands." Police said that the situation is "currently under control," though security arrangements remain in place as a precaution.

The incident came to light on Sunday after the body of a Class V student was recovered from a pond near her home in the Suryapur Hat area under Dhapdhapi-II Gram Panchayat in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas.

According to the victim's family, the girl had left home around 4 pm on Saturday, saying she was going to buy food, but never returned. Her body was recovered the following day, sparking widespread outrage in the locality.

A 26-year-old man, identified as Indrajit Tanti, was suspected by locals of being involved in the alleged rape and murder. He was allegedly assaulted by a mob and later succumbed to his injuries after being taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari spoke to the victim's father over the phone on Sunday. He assured the family of a "fair investigation" and "strict punishment for those found guilty." The victim's father said he had been asked to visit Bhawani Bhavan on Tuesday for further discussions.
