In a dramatic turn of events early on Wednesday, one of the key accused in the shocking gang rape and murder of a minor girl in Baruipur was killed in a police encounter during a crime scene reconstruction.

According to a police statement, around 12:45 am on July 8, 2026, the Investigating Officer of Baruipur Police Station Case No. 1350/26, along with his team, took Prabhas Mondal (also referred to as Prabash Mondal) from custody to Suryapur area under Baruipur PS for reconstructing the sequence of the crime.

Just as the reconstruction was about to begin, the accused allegedly snatched the service weapon of a police personnel, fired a single round towards the team, and attempted to flee the spot. Police personnel returned fire in self-defence, injuring Mondal. He was immediately rushed to Baruipur Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Further legal formalities and investigation into the incident are underway.

Mondal was among the prime accused arrested recently in connection with the brutal rape and murder of an 11- year-old girl in the Baruipur area. CCTV footage had reportedly played a crucial role in identifying him, showing him with the victim shortly before the incident. Other co-accused, including Ananda Sardar and Dibakar Sardar, were also arrested in the case, which has sparked widespread outrage in the region.

The incident comes amid heightened public scrutiny and demands for justice in the high-profile case. Police have maintained that the encounter was a direct response to the accused's attempt to attack the team and escape. Authorities have assured that a thorough probe into the encounter will be conducted as per standard procedure.
