High drama unfolded at the Kalighat residence of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee in the early hours of Saturday when a large police team entered his home around 2:30-3:00 a.m. , triggering a major political controversy.
According to media reports, personnel from Kolkata Police and Paschim Medinipur Police, accompanied by Central Security Forces, arrived at Banerjee’s residence and carried out a search operation. When there was no response, the team allegedly broke open locks to enter the premises and carried out a search that continued for several hours.The midnight raid was apparently conducted to nab Abhishek Banerjee's personal secretary Sumit Roy, sources added. Roy has been booked in an alleged extortion case.
Former Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee rushed to her nephew’s residence soon after learning of the police action, adding to the tension surrounding the incident.
Refusing to comment on the late night searches, Abhishek Banerjee told reporters to "go ask the investigating agencies".
The incident comes amid ongoing political turmoil and multiple investigations involving senior Trinamool Congress leaders. The pre-dawn operation has sparked fresh debate over its timing and political implications, with the opposition and ruling party leaders exchanging accusations.
