Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Firhad Hakim has stepped down from the post of Mayor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), bringing an end to his tenure at the helm of the city's civic administration.

According to sources, Hakim had recently conveyed his desire to resign from the mayoral position to TMC chairperson Mamata Banerjee. After discussions within the party leadership, Banerjee accepted his request, clearing the way for his departure from the post.

Hakim's resignation marks a major change in the leadership of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, one of the country's largest urban local bodies. As Mayor, he oversaw civic administration in the state capital and played a key role in the implementation of several municipal projects and public service initiatives.

Reports indicated that the decision followed Hakim's communication to the party leadership expressing his wish to relinquish the mayoral responsibilities. Following Mamata Banerjee's approval, the resignation process was set in motion, effectively ending his tenure as Mayor.

The development comes at a time of heightened political activity in West Bengal, with significant organisational and administrative changes taking place across various levels of governance. Hakim's departure is expected to trigger discussions within the ruling Trinamool Congress regarding his successor and the future leadership of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
