The Mahim Police have arrested a 19-year-old man who had been absconding for three days after allegedly stabbing a commuter following a minor altercation outside Mahim railway station.

The accused, identified as Anas Ansari (19), was arrested from the Wadala area after three days of the incident. However, the knife allegedly used in the attack is yet to be recovered.

According to a senior police officer, investigators scanned footage from over 100 CCTV cameras to trace the accused’s movements before locating and arresting him in Wadala.

During preliminary questioning, Ansari reportedly told police that he had disposed of the weapon after the incident. Efforts are underway to recover the knife.

The incident took place on the night of June 25, 2026, after which the accused had been on the run. Police said Ansari is a native of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh.

An FIR has been registered against him under Sections 109(1) (attempt to murder), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The attack occurred near New India Bar on Senapati Bapat Marg in Mahim West. The victim, Naveen Prasanna (35), works as an office boy with a private company in Lower Parel. After finishing work, he arrived at Mahim railway station at around 10 pm and was walking home when his shoulder accidentally brushed against Ansari near Bata Shoe Mart, causing the latter’s mobile phone to fall.

Despite apologising for the accidental collision, Naveen was allegedly abused by Ansari, who became enraged over the incident. Naveen continued walking away, but the accused allegedly followed him and intercepted him again near New India Bar.

Police said Ansari then pulled out a concealed knife and stabbed Naveen in the abdomen before fleeing the spot while brandishing the weapon to intimidate bystanders.

The injured Naveen Prasanna was rushed to Sion Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Police are continuing their investigation and are questioning the accused to recover the weapon used in the attack.
