Amid intensifying speculation over Bihar’s next chief minister, Janata Dal (United) national working president Sanjay Kumar Jha on Tuesday underlined the enduring political influence of outgoing Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, asserting that future governments would continue to function under his guidance. The remarks come ahead of a crucial NDA meeting scheduled for 4 pm in the central hall of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, where legislators are expected to formally select the next chief minister.

“This is an emotional moment for the 140 million people of Bihar. There was a time when people felt ashamed to say they were from Bihar, but after Nitish ji’s leadership, the state’s dignity and prestige have been restored,” said Sanjay Jha, crediting Nitish Kumar with transforming Bihar’s image and restoring public confidence in the state’s identity.

He maintained that Nitish Kumar’s role would remain central to governance, regardless of who formally assumes office next. “As far as this government is concerned, whoever becomes Chief Minister, whichever government is formed, it will effectively be Nitish Kumar’s government. It will function under his guidance for the next 25 to 30 years and beyond. His advice will always shape its direction,” Jha said.

Sanjay Jha also addressed the growing political involvement of Nitish Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumar, indicating that his future role within the party would be decided collectively. “Nishant Kumar is now active in politics. He has joined the party and is working to strengthen the organisation. He is meeting people, understanding the party structure and offering suggestions. Whatever role he takes on in the future will be decided by party members,” he added.

Meanwhile, within the NDA, discussions over leadership have gathered pace. With the alliance preparing to form a BJP-led government, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has emerged as a frontrunner for the top post. The BJP legislature party is set to meet in Patna under the supervision of central observer Shivraj Singh Chouhan to finalise its choice of leader. The decision will then be placed before NDA legislators for formal approval, effectively sealing the appointment of Bihar’s next chief minister.

Parallel discussions are also underway within the JD(U) regarding the composition and structure of the new NDA government in the state, as coalition partners negotiate their respective roles in the incoming administration.
