Indian Naval sail training ship INS Sudarshini has marked a significant milestone in India's maritime diplomacy by participating in SAIL Boston 250, with the Consulate General of India in Boston describing the vessel's presence as a reflection of the country's maritime heritage, indigenous shipbuilding capabilities and expanding naval cooperation with the United States.
The vessel arrived in Boston as part of the international celebrations commemorating the 250th anniversary of US Independence, taking part in the prestigious Parade of Sails alongside ships from across the world.
"Ahoy Boston—Sudarshini arrives! INS SUDARSHINI entered historic port of Boston flying in the majestic Parade of Sails as part of SAIL Boston 250," the Consulate General of India in Boston said in a post on X.
During the Captain's Reception aboard the ship, the Consulate organised a media briefing attended by diplomats and invited guests. "At the Captain's Reception on board INS SUDARSHINI participating in SAIL250, @IndiainBoston held a media briefing," the mission said.
Addressing those present, Consul General Raghuram S. highlighted the importance of INS Sudarshini's participation in the landmark maritime event and its role in representing India's naval traditions on the global stage.
According to the Consulate, the vessel is the only naval tall ship from Asia and the wider Indian Ocean Region participating in the celebrations. "SUDARSHINI is the only Naval tall ship to participate from Asia & the wider Indian Ocean Region," the Consulate said, adding that the ship "sailed for five and a half months to reach the US East Coast to participate in the 250th Anniversary of US Independence."
The mission also highlighted the ship's sailing capabilities, noting that INS Sudarshini completed an 18-day continuous voyage under sail, demonstrating the Indian Navy's traditional seamanship and operational proficiency. "It showcased India's naval capabilities, as it sailed on its masts for 18 consecutive days," the Consulate said.
Emphasising India's indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities, the mission noted that every component of the vessel had been built domestically. "Every part, equipment and fabric of SUDARSHINI was designed and manufactured in India, showcasing India's shipbuilding capabilities," it said. The Consulate further pointed out that INS Sudarshini serves as a dedicated training platform for Indian Naval cadets. "It functions as a training vessel for Indian Naval cadets who sail and undergo training," the statement added.
Ahead of the ship's ceremonial entry into Boston harbour, Consul General Raghuram S. boarded INS Sudarshini at sea to witness its participation in the event. According to the Consulate, the envoy "embarked the ship at sea to take a firsthand account of LOKAYAN 2026 and SAIL BOSTON 250 and the ship's spectacular participation, underscoring India's rich maritime heritage and maritime cooperation between India and the US."
INS Sudarshini's participation in SAIL Boston 250 is being viewed as a significant demonstration of India's maritime outreach, showcasing the country's naval training traditions, indigenous shipbuilding expertise and its growing maritime partnership with the United States and other participating nations.
